Reframing Alzheimer’s: The Power of Positive Language and Compassionate Care
This session challenges the traditional loss-based narrative of Alzheimer’s and introduces a strengths-based approach rooted in neuroscience and practical application.
Current terminology—mild, moderate, severe—lacks objective measures and reinforces decline. Instead, this presentation explores how language and perception shape care, focusing on what individuals can do rather than what they cannot.
Using the Sojourner Framework, a progressive model that redefines each stage of Alzheimer’s based on lived experience and cognitive capacity, attendees will:
Examine how language impacts perception, behavior, and patient outcomes.
Learn evidence-based strategies to enhance communication and reduce distress while preserving autonomy.
Shift from a deficit-based approach to one that fosters meaningful engagement and quality of life.
Explore how reframing terminology can influence research, policy, and clinical practice.
This session is ideal for researchers, clinicians, and advocates seeking to move beyond traditional frameworks and apply scientifically informed, person-centered care strategies.

Reframing Alzheimer’s: The Power of Positive Language and Compassionate Care
Traditional Alzheimer’s terminology reinforces decline, yet research shows that language shapes perception, engagement, and outcomes. This session introduces the Sojourner Framework, shifting from a loss-based model to a strengths-based approach that highlights cognitive abilities rather than deficits. Attendees will gain actionable strategies to foster meaningful engagement, enhance communication, and rethink how we define and support the Alzheimer’s journey.
