  • Title: Reframing Alzheimers The Power of Positive Language and Compassionate Care

Abstract

Traditional approaches to Alzheimer’s care frequently rely on language that emphasizes decline and loss, unintentionally shaping negative perceptions of the condition. This deficit-focused narrative can diminish the lived experiences of individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, reinforcing a sense of hopelessness. In response, this presentation introduces an evidence-based framework designed to redefine how we discuss and approach Alzheimer’s, shifting the focus to strengths, preserved abilities, and opportunities for connection.

Drawing from research in neuroscience and psychology, the session explores how certain cognitive, emotional, and sensory abilities persist throughout the progression of Alzheimer’s—and, in some cases, even flourish. These abilities create pathways for enriching lives, building meaningful relationships, and fostering dignity. Participants will gain insights into how this mindset shift challenges traditional caregiving narratives, creating a more compassionate and empowering approach to care.

Real-world case studies are used to illustrate the practical impact of this perspective. From improving caregiving practices to enhancing the emotional well-being of both individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, this session demonstrates how adopting a strengths-based approach can transform care delivery. Attendees will explore how language and perception play pivotal roles in caregiving, advocacy, and societal attitudes, and they will leave with actionable strategies for applying these insights to their work.

By reframing Alzheimer’s care through the lens of abilities and connection, this session seeks to inspire a broader cultural shift toward compassion, dignity, and hope. Whether in research, caregiving, or community advocacy, participants will be equipped to promote positive change and create environments that celebrate the unique journey of every individual living with Alzheimer’s.
