Among patients suffering from dementia Major depressive disorder affects approximately 40% of patients with dementia. While antidepressants remain the first-line treatment for major depressive episodes, the elderly population often faces multiple comorbidities and is frequently subject to polypharmacy, increasing the risk of adverse drug interactions and complications. In this context, non-pharmacological therapies present a promising alternative. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) emerges as an effective, easy-to-use, and side-effect-free option for treating depression. Its potential for at-home use makes it especially suitable for elderly patients, reducing reliance on medication and minimizing the risk of drug interactions. This presentation aims to review the efficacy and clinical relevance of tDCS in managing depression among elderly individuals with dementia.
